City Applies for EPA Cleanup Funds

October 19, 2009
The City submitted a proposal for EPA Cleanup Grant funds. These funds would be used for the remediation of Aycock Corner.   Grant applications were due to EPA on October 16, 2009 and notification of awards is expected in the Spring of 2010.  EPA Grant applications are a very involved task, and may City staff, Downtown Development Authority Staff were integral in assisting the Central Savannah River Area Regional Commission in the completion of this grant application.  The City would also like to thank all of the community members who wrote letters of support for this cleanup grant application.  EPA feels that community involvement is an important step in the Brownfield Program and your letters of support were very helpful!

Although these grants are very competitive, the City is optimistic that it will obtain the funding for the cleanup of Aycock Corner.  The cleanup activities at Aycock Corner are expected to include underground fuel tank removal, lead-contaminated soil removal, and possible building demolition.
