City of

Millen Brownfields

Community Meeting Held at City Hall

February 26, 2009
A community meeting was held to discuss the results of the soil and ground water sampling activities at Aycock Corner (former SOC Station). Among those in attendance included city officials, community members, Aycock Corner property owners, CSRA RDC official, and representatives environmental consultants.

Hart & Hickman, the City's environmental consultant, presented the results of the soil and ground water assessment at Aycock Corner.  The results reported indicate that some lead was identified in soils behind the building and petroleum products are present in soil and ground water beneath the site.

The CSRA RDC and the City of Millen have entered the property into the State Brownfield Program, which provides liability protection for future property owners.  The current Aycock Corner owners will soon be donating the property to the City of Millen.  The CSRA RDC and City are actively searching for funding to clean-up the problems at Aycock Corner.

After these results were discussed, the future use of Aycock Corner was discussed.  Because of a municipal stormwater line located beneath the property, only approximately half of the property can be redeveloped.  The ideas dicussed included:
  • Sandwich Shop
  • Greenspace over storm water line
  • Parking over storm water line
  • Small office space
  • New office for Downtown Development Authority
