Address: Northeast of Intersection of Mill and Jarrell Streets, Hampton, SC
Property Description: The site was most recently operated by Safety Disposal Systems of South Carolina, Inc. as ancillary storage for the adjacent medical and specialized waste incinerator. The property consists of approximately 8.53-acres of recently cleared land, and is partially zoned basic industrial. The property is easily accessible by Highway 601. Historically, portions of the subject site were first developed prior to 1957 with three residential properties. In the 1970s, a truck repair facility was developed on the southern portion of the subject site and a welding shop was operated on the western portion of the subject site. After 1985, portions of the subject site were utilized as storage areas for trailers and plastic medical waste containers either awaiting incineration at the adjacent former SDS Medical Waste Incinerator (formerly operated by Southland and Chambers Medical Technology) and/or following incineration of their contents. Several site buildings were utilized by SDS for storage or offices. The truck repair facility was operated until SDS was closed down by a SCDHEC Administrative Order in February 2002. SDS subsequently declared bankruptcy. The SDS properties remained vacant for several years until late 2007 when the Town of Hampton had the on-site buildings demolished.
Surrounding properties were historically utilized for agricultural, residential, and industrial purposes. Neighboring industrial uses have included a welding shop, a chemical manufacturing facility (Reichold Chemicals and Georgia Pacific), specialized waste incinerator, and an industrial laminates manufacturing facility that was operated by Plywood Plastics Corporation in 1942, Westinghouse Electric Co. in 1952, International Paper in 1995, and Nevamar in 2005.
The soil and ground water sampling for the Phase II Environmental Site Assessment was recently completed. Data is currently being reviewed. Check back soon for updates on this property!
